Acting for a child
The RAF leaflet includes a parent or legal guardian of a minor child among the people it identifies in its claims information. Its forms checklist also refers to birth certificates, court orders and letters of appointment in different representative situations.
The right person to act can depend on the family situation and any legal appointment. This page does not decide who has authority in a particular matter.
Records to keep safely
- The child's birth certificate and identity information where available
- Identity information for the parent, guardian or representative
- Any court order, Master’s letter or other authority document where applicable
- Police, hospital and medical records relating to the accident
- Letters or reference numbers from the RAF or another institution
Supporting a child through the process
Keep explanations simple and age-appropriate. Make notes of appointments, treatment and paperwork, but do not pressure a child to give a version of events beyond what they can honestly remember.
