From the accident to basic records
The first stage is practical: obtain medical help where needed, report the crash, and preserve the basic facts. The RAF leaflet highlights police reports, witness information, hospital records, medical accounts and details of the vehicles and parties involved.
This is not about building a perfect file immediately. It is about keeping reference numbers and records from being lost while you work out what information may apply.
Lodging a claim
The RAF's public material says a claim is made on a prescribed form and that applicable sections should be completed. The form includes basic claimant and accident information; the medical portion is completed by the treating doctor where relevant.
The official forms checklist shows that supporting documents differ by type of matter. Check the current form and instructions before submitting anything, and keep proof of delivery and a copy of what was sent.
What may happen after lodgement
The RAF leaflet explains that the Fund registers a submitted claim and investigates the facts, legal compliance, timing, degree of fault and supporting losses. It may ask for further information where a submission is incomplete.
A request for more information is not the same as a final outcome. Read the request carefully, record the deadline stated in it, and seek clarification if you do not understand what is being asked.
